southern and largest island. The people are proud, devoted to their customs and
traditions, openhearted and generous in their hospitality. Cretan life is as varied as its
terrain. Along the northern shores it is lively and intense. In the picturesque villages

civilizations can be found everywhere, from the Minoan palaces at Knossos with their
incredible frescoes to Byzantine churches and Venetian castles. Two airports: Hania

of King Minos, and the home of dreaded Minataur. Here unfolds the tale of the lovers
Ariadne and Theseus. Ariadne saved her prince from the Bull of Minos (the legendary
Minotaur) by giving him a long thread which he unravelled as he sought the Minotaur
through the underground labyrinth, and thus was able to find his way out. Today the site
has been faithfully restored and features imposing frescoes, tiled rooms and a romance of
mythic proportions. |
